Words of kindness are works of kindness, and since they cost so little and are worth so much, we should strew them plentifully all along life's way. ~Modern Proverbs

You are the Fifth Doctor: Your youthful exterior belies your centuries of experience, and even you have a bit of difficulty rectifying these two aspects of your personality. You are compassionate, introspective, and deeply troubled by injustice. If you occasionally seem to display more vulnerability than your predecessors, it's probably because you're more openly human than they were. Are your companions finally rubbing off on you?
Thanks Betty, for sharing this quiz, but I didn't quite expect this result. Hmm. Which doctor would I rather be? Hmmm? posted by deborah

I've lost it
My Black Hills silver and gold bracelet is history unless some good Samaratin finds it and turns it in to the lost and found. As near as I can figure it fell off my wrist somewhere between the Safeway and Walmart and Home. Hmm. I suppose I'll need to put a lost and found ad in the paper as well as check the lost and found at those two stores.
It's my own fault really because I knew the catch was not reliable, but I thought I had it fixed. *sigh* posted by deborah

It's broken
After a mere fifteen years the dishwasher is history. It's no surprise, though, because it has been well used and abused during those years. The poor thing. The really bad news is that we won't be getting a new one right away because we really, really, need a new kitchen range. *sigh* posted by deborah

1. Are you going to school this year? No, but I might take a couple of online courses from the local community college.
2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate? Thank goodness for me that horror was finished in 1975 when I graduated high school.
3. What are/were your favorite school subjects? Science, Creative Writing
4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects? Math, math, math (oh, and P.E.).
5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite? The chorus teacher was groovy. posted by deborah

Theme Thursday This week's theme idea is from Bjoern. He wrote, "as it's extremly hot in Europe these days - what about the topic 'Heat'? Fire, Desert, People Kissing... whatever...". Show us what your interpretation is.
My husband and I used to do a lot of camping. It seems like we always had a campfire in the evening no matter how warm or cold the night. Watching the fire crack and pop was a peaceful time. Along with the peace came daydreams and imaginings. Stories, of course, were a must. Recalling past camping trips and family memories. No matter how often the stories were shared no one seemed to get tired of hearing them.
The second best entertainment was laying on the grass and watching the stars and pondering one's place in the universe. posted by deborah

It was worth it
I wasn't going to go to Mom's last night because we had clouds all day, but she called about 3 pm and said my stepdad had said that as soon as the sun set the clouds would go away and we could set up the scope and look at Mars. So, we did!
It took my oldest nephew about 1/2 hour to get the telescope adjusted. Then we all took turns looking at the red planet. It was awesome. Actually, it was just a small, round, reddish ball, but we knew what it was.
My stepdad didn't look at it, though, he was busy watching the Mariners game. posted by deborah

Speaking of Songs ( I don't think any of these will get stuck)
When I was at the fair last week, I thought the concert by Heartbreak Tonight, the Eagles tribute band was great. I never realized that "Peaceful Easy Feeling was such a sexy song.
Anyway, that got me to thinking about sexy songs. And I tried to think of at least five that I find sexy.
1. Fever (Steve Blackwood) 2. Peaceful Easy Feeling (Eagles) 3. The Grass Won't Pay No Mind (Neil Diamond) 4. Something's Burning (Kenny Rogers) 5.
I'll have to think about a 5th song. Any suggestions? posted by deborah

It's a medical reality
Earworms. That's what at least one doctor has determined are those songs, noises, and jingles that get stuck in your head. I am not suffering from that particular malady right now. PLEASE! No one suggest a song.
I have been thinking that when my family is once again down to a 4 passenger car that I will get a VW Bug. I thought about getting a new one, but I really want one of the "real" ones. I had a '68 Bug when I was a twenty-something youngster. I loved it. In fact, I cried when I sold it.
The children took down the tents yesterday. I suppose that means summer vacation is almost over. They are excited about returning to school on the 3rd. My incoming freshman had his school orientation Friday. He said he had butterflys in his stomach. How nervous he is going to be on the first day. At least he has an older brother to help him through the transition from Junior to High School. posted by deborah

How Much Is Too Much?
I decided to wear my jewelry box yesterday. Well, a small portion of it anyway. I wore 18 rings (yes, really!), ten bracelets, one wrist watch, five necklaces with seven pendants attached, three earings, an ear cuff, two toe rings, and two temporary tattoos. Goodness, how ridiculous! It was fun! posted by deborah

Tomorrow Mars is going to be at its closest approach to Earth. I think I will take the children out to Mom's where the city lights won't interfer and set up the telescopes. I hope the clouds will be gone by then. Don't you know that we are having a record number of sunny days in a row, but the day I want to go look at the night sky it will probably be cloudy! posted by deborah

I Love Jewelry
It is one of my weaknesses! That's why I have such a massive collection of it. So much that I won't possible wear everything, however that doesn't stop me from acquiring more!
I know I should stay away from the jewelry booths when I am at the fair, but alas, I didn't. I came home with four items in sterling silver: a created opal bracelet, a created opal necklace, an amber ring (it's huge!) and a dragon pendant.
If my husband knew how much I spent on jewelry this year he would have a few words to say. So far he has only noticed the amber ring. You can hardly not notice it, it is neary 2 inches long and an inch wide.
1957 Coca Cola Advertising, illustrated by Jack Potter
I found a grapic of the back cover of the October 1957 National Geographic Coke ad. Cool! It was painted by Jack Potter who illustrated a series of ads with the theme "Favorite of the World" for Coca-Cola during the late 1950s. This one shows people in India enjoying Coke.
It was a good month, after all it was the month I was born. But, what is fun is that when I was at a yard sale the other day I found a box of old National Geographic magazine covers. One of them was from October 1957. The back cover is a Coke ad. The slogan for Coke at that point in time was "Coca-Cola sign of good taste." Anyway, I have framed both the back cover and the front cover. The front cover is without a photo, but has the titles of the articles inside the issew, which are:
Poets' voices linger in Scottish shrines The elephant and I Beauty and bounty of southern state trees (paintings flowers botany) Ballerinas in pink (flamingos birds) Gypsy cave dwellers of Andalusia
I'll have to try and get a complete issue from somewhere so I can read the article about poets. I think it is neat that my for my birth month one of the articles was about poets since I am now a poet. posted by deborah

A Day at the Fair
Last Wednesday I spent an entire day at the Soutwest Washington Fair. The children had all day ride bracelets (which means for 15 dollars they could ride an unlimited number of rides during the day), so we arrived at 10 AM and left at 10PM.
It was a fun day, too. I haven't had as much fun at the fair in years. The first thing I did was check out the photo exhibit. My sister had three entries there. She took a first place ribbon in "People" and an honorable mention in "nature." She also had a dandy photo entered in the "Misc." catagory, but didn't receive a ribbon for it (an oversight on the part of the judges, I'm sure!).
Then I checked out the Senior Art because my friend had two oil paintings entered in the "Beginners" catagory. She received a first place ribbon on the portrait of her older sister. It was well deserved, too, because she is a very talented artist!
I also enjoyed the floral displays and the hobbies department.
I spent too much money on jewelry. I purchased an amber ring. It is huge! But, I'm convinced it was meant for me because it was the only ring there that fit the forefinger on my right hand. It was made for me, obviously! I also purchased a silver and opal bracelet and necklace, as well as a silver dragon pendant.
I didn't eat too much, though.
The highlight of the day was getting a chance to enjoy the music of "Heartbreak Tonight," an Eagles tribute band. They did an excellent job. It was a free concert and they rocked out the fair grounds.
At least I hope it is finally the first of my regualar posts. I think I will have time in the mornings again to get online and stay caught up.
I don't have as much time as I previously had to get online. Because of that I decided to close my poetry page Wellspring to new submissions. I also decided to delete Dayspring entirely. I still have The Beehive online and will continue to accept submissions there. I am also hoping to get my personal poetry page, Ripples completely updated. Sigh. Still have too much to do. posted by deborah
